The distillery lies in a wooded glen on the western edge of the Campsie Fells, not far from Loch Lomond.
Glengoyne was established in 1833 (when it was known as Glenguin, later as Burnfoot of Drumgoyne).
The Highland Line which notionally divided Highland and Lowland Scotland runs through the distillery grounds and although classified as a Highland Malt, has many characterics of a Lowland; pale in colour, fresh and light to taste.
What distinguishes Glengoyne, is that it is the only malt distillery to use completely unpeated malt. By avoiding peat smoke in the drying process, the more subtle flavours in the barley (only Golden Promise is used) are allowed to emerge.
The Glengoyne 12 year old Cask strength does not undergo chill-filtration prior to bottling; therefore, it may go cloudy in cold conditions, or when water is added.
