Historical background : Gigondas was a rest camp for the roman legions and vines where then already flourishing. The vineyard expanded greatly in the 19th century and was granted its own appellation in 1971.
Location and soil : East of Orange and of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, gentle slopes facing south; red clay and pebblestones.
Vinification : Very traditional, with a long maceration in temperature-controlled stainless-steel vats. Ageing in larger french oak barrels during 9 months.
Ageing potential : 4 to 8 years and more depending on vintage year.
Tasting notes : Brillant deep red color. Intense aromas of ripe black plums, liquorice and damp earth. Full-bodied, generous, richly fruity, with solid round tannins. Long and warm finish.
Food pairing : Red meat (fillet of beef), small winged-game (pigeon, thrust, quail), cheeses. Serving temperature : 17°C/63°F.
